US Presidential Elections – 4 more years!

"Vote Obama car"

Yesterday was 6 weeks until the U.S. Presidential Elections, which will be held on 6th of November.  I thought I would do some reminiscing of 2008 Elections and this amazing day when Barack Obama was elected the first Black (actually half White half Black as he’s mother was White) 44th President of the United States. Both the election day and the Presidential Inauguration was an amazing experience and I was fortunate to be part of it.

In 2008-2009 I was studying at the George Washington University, a few blocks from the White House and I was able to be a part of the most exciting presidential election year in the history of America. On the election night I saw a lot of Americans crying from happiness and disbelief that they managed to see an African-American being elected a President. I hugged a 90 year old African-American woman, who did not believe it would happen in her lifetime and she couldn’t be more proud that day because she was fighting for this day to come herself, being involved in the Civil Rights Movement in the 60s. Regardless of the economic situation and if we agree with Obama’s policies or not, that cold day in November 2008 made quite a few people across the whole World believe in the U.S. and the American people. Let’s hope this year we will witness the same passion and devotion and we will be able to secure another 4 years for the best Presidential candidate America seen to date (besides Jimmy Carter).

Top Tech Travel Destinations For Nerds

When the summer rolls around, travel becomes the hot topic on everyone’s lips; your friends talk about their upcoming party trip to Ibiza, your neighbour talks about jetting the family off for a relaxing time in the Caribbean, even the old woman you see at the bus stop has booked a Mediterranean cruise. But what about you? Rowdy nightclubs aren’t your thing, you hate the feel of sand between your toes and you’d be bored out of your mind spending two weeks at sea. You’re a nerd at heart, and you want your holiday to reflect that, right? Then check out these awesome travel destinations that are positively swimming in geeky gadgets, eccentric electronics and nerdy knickknacks.

Akihabara, Tokyo, Japan
Surely there’s no better travel destination for nerds than a place commonly known as ‘Electric Town’? This buzzing central Tokyo district is home to markets and department stores filled to bursting with everything from wires and headphones to fully functioning robots and gadgets that you have to see to believe, and even then you still might not believe it! Some of the country’s largest comic stores are located here, showcasing the best in Japanese anime and manga. Be sure to take photographs of the massive Sega Towers and the Sunday afternoon cosplayers.

Las Vegas Strip at Night

Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
While Sin City is more commonly known for gambling, drinking and general debauchery, each January it becomes the place to be for those with a love for gadgets. The city plays host to the annual International Consumer Electronics Show, a 4 day event that is renowned for introducing technologies such as the Amiga, the Commodore 64 and, more recently, the 3D HDTV to the world. Beware that hotels on the strip will fill up quickly over the CES week, but that flight operators usually offer discounts, meaning you could bag yourself some cheap airline tickets.

London, England, United Kingdom
OK, so you don’t have to be a nerd to love Harry Potter, but it helps! Explore the favourite haunts of the boy who lived on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in North-West London. As well as seeing some of the sets, you’ll also be shown the state of the art technology used to animate Dobby, the green screens used to make the Nimbus 2000 soar through the sky and the secret techie methods for making Hagrid appear twice as tall as the average wizard. Of course, no trip is complete without stopping by Kings Cross to try and find platform 9 3/4!

These destinations are just the start, only your imagination (and the availability of flights!) can limit you. There are plenty of alternative ways to spend your holidays rather than lounging on the beach or clubbing. See the largest radio telescope in the world in Puerto Rico, witness a shuttle take off at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida or take a wander around San Francisco’s Silicon Valley, home to some of the most famous tech companies in the world!

What to wear during the British summer?

I visited Cornwall during the Jubilee Bank Holiday in June. You would expect June to have lots of sunshine and cold bear at the beach. In the UK, however, things have been not exactly as we expected… It’s been raining since about March with a stable temperature being not more than 20 degrees. Funny that as I am writing this post the weather suppose to get better in London for the first time this year with temperature hitting 30 degrees!! But as we were hoping for a lovely sun beams in Cornwall, we had to spend our break wearing raincoats and wellies! We made it a great holiday anyway but it seems like summer weather in the UK is a luxury these days.
